INFLUENZA VACCINES AND THE UPCOMING FLU SEASONS

Influenza, commonly known as the “flu”, is a respiratory viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. Although many people recover from the common cold or flu with minimal treatment and without any serious complications; the symptoms of flu can develop suddenly and can result in complex flu infections causing more severe symptoms (e.g., pneumonia, multi-organ failure and exacerbation of underlying pulmonary and cardiac conditions) and even death.  Each year, about one billion people worldwide are affected by seasonal flu and the possibility of a flu pandemic is always a threat.
