HEALTH MINISTER EXPRESSES CAREFUL OPTIMISM ABOUT DROP IN NEW COVID-19 DAILY INFECTIONS

The Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize has expressed careful optimism about the reduction in new daily COVID-19 infections. In a report carried by the Daily Maverick, Dr Mkhize is quoted as having ordered that COVID-19 tests be done in all cases of sudden death patients in healthcare facilities and homes, in order to improve the department’s death records.

The Minister cautioned that “we are not out of the woods yet”. He urged South Africans to adherence to safety protocols including, washing of hands, wearing of masks, social distancing and limiting funerals to only 50 people.

Meanwhile, confirmed new infections in the past 24 hours are 3 946 taking the national infections to 572 865. On the other hand 260 new COVID-19 related deaths took place in the past 24 hours, taking the national death total to 11 270.

. The Provincial breakdown is as follows:

  • 68 from Eastern Cape
  • 62 from Free State
  • 30 from Gauteng
  • 39 from KZN
  • 14 from Limpopo
  • 18 from Mpumalanga
  • 21 from Western Cape
  • 8 from Northern Cape.

The recovery rate is now sitting at 76%.

Globally, 276 398 new cases have been reported. Total global infections to date are 20 439 814. Deaths are 744 385.
