ADDING AND REMOVING DEPENDENTS

What is a dependent?

A dependent is a spouse or partner, child or parent who is dependent on the member for care and support.

How to add and remove dependents

Adding a dependent

  • A Member may apply for the registration of his or her dependents at the time of the membership application.
  • Registration for a new-born or newly adopted child must be done within 30 days of the date of birth or adoption of the child. If this timeline is missed, then a general waiting period of 3 months will apply. The member will be liable for those claims received during the new-born’s waiting period.
  • Similarly, registration of a spouse if the member marries after joining SAMWUMED has to be done within 30 days of the marriage. If this timeline is missed, then a general waiting period of 3 months will apply.

DID YOU KNOW?

To register a dependant, a Dependant Registration form must be completed and submitted to the Scheme via your Human Resource Department along with the required documentation such as copies of birth certificates when registering children; affidavits and marriage certificates for spouses and partners; proof of study and/or affidavits proving dependency for dependants over the age of 21.

Removing a dependent

  • A Member must give the Scheme a one month written notice to cancel the registration of a dependant.
  • Once a dependent is no longer a dependent, the member must inform the Scheme within 30 days.
