The Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize announced 6 579 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa in the past 24 hours, bringing the national total to 118 375. Combined with yesterday’s new cases, the country registered over 12 000 new cases in two days.
However, the new deaths recorded were the lowest this week at 87. The daily deaths since Monday have been higher than 100. With the new deaths, the death toll now stands at 2 292.
53 of the deaths took place in the Western Cape, 15 in Kwazulu Natal, 17 from Eastern Cape and 2 in Gauteng.
Meanwhile, according to IOL, Cape Town will soon have a temporary morgue to refrigerate and store patients who die due to Covid-19. This was announced on Thursday by the Western Cape government, which is building the site in partnership with the City of Cape Town
The makeshift morgue will be able to hold up to 770 bodies and will be located at the Tygerberg Hospital, IOL added.
