The Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize projects that bed capacity, especially ICU beds, will soon become an issue for all Provinces in the face of rising COVID-19 infections.
According to a report carried by Businesstech, Dr Mkhize revealed that that the Department of Health has developed a response strategy which also took into consideration non-coronavirus treatments for other diseases including TB and HIV.
The Minister said the situation was no longer just about reporting numbers, “we are now at a point where it’s our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, close friends and comrades that are infected”.
Latest Statistics
Today South Africa has a total of 238 339 confirmed COVID-19 cases. This is an increase of 13 674 new cases in the past 24 hours. Gauteng now accounts for 34, 2%, Western Cape 31, 4% and the Eastern Cape 18, 6%.
129 new COVID-19 related deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours. Total deaths are now 3 720.
Gauteng and Western Cape had 37 deaths respectively, whilst the Eastern Cape accounted for 28, Kwazulu Natal 26 and the Northen Cape 1.
Just over two million tests have been conducted thus far.
