South Africa has recorded 8 971 new COVID-19 cases pushing the total beyond the 200 000 mark. The country’s cases now stand at 205 721.
Gauteng’s new cases increased by more than 3 000 in the last 24 hours, whilst the Western Cape increased by just over 1 400 and the Eastern Cape by just over 2 000. The Northern Cape continues to have the lowest infections.
A further 111 COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total deaths to 3 310. The breakdown is as follows:
- 9 from the Eastern Cape
- 17 from Limpopo
- 35 from the Western Cape
- And 50 from Gauteng.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize today announced the death of the MEC of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs in the North West, Gordon Kegakilwe due to COVID-19 complications.
Recoveries to date are 97 848.
