SA RECORDS 8 773 NEW COVID-19 CASES AS MORE SCHOOL CHILDREN RETURN TO SCHOOL

As of today, South Africa’s confirmed COVID-19 are 196 750 including the 8 773 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Gauteng is edging closer to the Western Cape in terms of cases. The Province, which recorded 4 031 new cases in the last 24 hours, now accounts for 32, 2% of COVID-19 cases, compared to the Western Cape’s 35, 3%.

There were a further 173 new COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the national deaths to 3 199. Gauteng is leading with daily deaths. The province recorded 71 deaths. It is followed by the Western Cape with 40, Kwazulu Natal with 21, The Eastern Cape with 29, the Orange Free State with 10 and the North West with 2.

Meanwhile, commenting on the return to school of more learners, the Minister of Education Angie Motshekga announced that since the return of Grade 7 and 12 learners on 08th June:

  • 968 out of a total of 25 762 schools were closed and re-opened due to COVID-19 cases
  • 2 740 teachers were infected by COVID-19 out of a total of 444 000 teachers
  • 1 260 learners were infected by the virus.

On Home Education, the Minister said this was allowed. But parents would have to apply through their Provincial Education Departments for home schooling.
