If a member dies, will their registered dependents continue to be covered by SAMWUMED?
The answer is Yes, should they wish to remain as members of the Scheme. The condition is that there should not be any break in membership and that contributions must be up to date.
Such members are referred to as continuation members and one of the dependents, usually the surviving spouse will become the principal member.
Because SAMWUMED is a restricted or closed scheme, no additional dependents will be allowed to join. For example, if the principal member dies and the spouse becomes the main member, they cannot add their new spouse as a dependent. They will have to leave SAMWUMED and join an open medical scheme.
