TB is a bacterial infection that spreads from person to person. Compared of others, TB of the lungs spreads faster. It can spread through the air in droplets when a person with the condition coughs, sneezes, spits, laughs, or talks.
Risk factors
People who already have other sicknesses are most at risk of developing TB. For example, people with the following conditions:
- HIV
- Substance abuse disorders
- Diabetes
- Silicosis
- Severe kidney disease
- head and neck cancer
Another risk factor is smoking or exposure to second hand smoke.
Symptoms of TB
- A persistent cough that lasts more than 3 weeks and usually brings up phlegm, which may be bloody
- Weight loss
- Night sweats
- High temperature
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- swellings in the neck
Preventing TB from infecting others
- Discovering it early and receiving treatment early
- Staying away from other people until there is no longer a risk of infection
- Wearing a mask and covering the mouth
