SAMWUMED is still amongst South Africa’s biggest restricted medical Schemes.

This is according to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) in its 2018/19 Annual Report.

In an article published by Business Tech on 20 October 2019, SAMWUMED’s membership of 33 644     and beneficiaries of 75 554 places it in a position of being one of the top biggest restricted schemes in South Africa.

Others in the same category are: – Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS), Polmed, Bankmed, and Platinum Health, to name a few.

Not only is SAMWUMED amongst the biggest, it is also financially healthy and able to meet all its obligations including paying member claims. For example, the Scheme registered financial reserves of R1.37 billion, had a surplus of R146 million and paid health related claims of R1.1 billion in 2018.

With its improved 2020 Benefits, SAMWUMED is well on its way to being the largest restricted medical aid in the local government sector.
