PANIC DISORDER IS A REAL ILLNESS

SHARE:

Panic Disorder is a real illness and 4% of South Africans suffer from it, says the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

Panic attacks are frightening and unpleasant and their average length or duration is between 4 to 6 minutes. The positive thing is that treatment is easily available.

Panic disorders are characterised by some of the following symptoms:- dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, confusion, lack of control, unreality, shaking and trembling, and sweaty palms.

Many times the disorder develops during the late teens and early adulthood and is found more often in women than men. Although the exact causes of the disorder are not known, researchers have linked it to a combination of factors, including:

  • A family history of panic disorders
  • Stressful life events
  • Drug and alcohol abuse (up to 30% of people with panic disorder abuse alcohol).
  • Caffeine, some cold and flu medicines, some anti-malaria prescriptions, appetite suppressants and local anaesthetics may trigger a panic attack.

Common physical symptoms associated with anxiety disorders include:

  • Muscle tension
  • Stomach upsets
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
