One in six South Africans suffer from anxiety, depression or substance-use problems. This does not include more serious conditions such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Furthermore, only 27% of South Africans reporting severe mental illness ever receive treatment. (Source – SA College of Applied Psychology)
At SAMWUMED we recognise that Mental Illness is serious and can affect everybody, irrespective of race, age, gender and background.
The Scheme has a Mental Health Programme that aims to help members and dependents to manage their emotional, psychological and social wellbeing.
The Programme provides support to patients suffering from drug and alcohol abuse as well. They receive the best quality primary mental healthcare that is available. This is achieved by ensuring collaboration between family practitioners, psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals.
Members who qualify for this programme are allocated a Care Manager, and also receive an Individualised Care Plan to allow their team of healthcare professionals to manage their condition effectively. In addition, they receive relevant education and information on community support groups.
