Dear SAMWUMED member, from 1 October 2023, your doctor must get authorisation before referring you to another healthcare provider to ensure your claims are paid.
Please see below information on how your doctor can obtain a referral number:
OBTAINING A REFERRAL NUMBER

Dial the Provider Contact Centre on 086 111 2666 and select option 5 for Healthcare Providers.

Enter your 7-digit practice number when prompted, followed by the #key.

Listen to the menu carefully and select the option for referral number.

Enter the membership number followed by the # key.

Enter the beneficiary number (example 00/01) followed by the # key.

Enter the beneficiary’s date of birth in the format dd/mm/yyyy followed by the # key.

Press 1 to enter the 7-digit practice number you are referring the patient to or the two-digit speciality code (example 18/86 followed by the # key).

Enter the number of months between 1 to 6 and confirm the selection.

The referral number will be read back to you.
