COVID-19 Vaccine
Dear Members
On 3rd January 2021 the Minister of Health gave an update on South Africa’s plans of procuring (buying) and distributing the COVID-19 vaccine, once it becomes available. South Africa will be buying the first batch of the vaccine through COVAX (a multinational body buying the vaccine on behalf of 190 countries). This first batch is expected to be available in South Africa in mid-2021. However, Government is working hard to bring the timelines forward.
Once available, the vaccine will initially be prioritised for healthcare workers, the elderly and the vulnerable, including qualifying members of the scheme.
COVID-19 treatment, including the vaccine, are considered PMB. Therefore, we wish to assure our members that SAMWUMED will cover the vaccine and COVID-19 treatment for free as part of normal benefits.
Having said that, it is critical that members continue with all preventative measures to protect themselves and their loved ones from contracting COVID-19. This includes social distancing, wearing of masks and washing of hands.
Kind regards
SAMWUMED Team
