What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases or disorders that damage the nerves at the back of the eyes, specifically the optic nerves. Glaucoma is as a result of increased pressure on the eye, although it may also affect eyes with normal pressure.

The pressure on the eye may be caused by chronic eye inflammation and thin corneas (the clear protective outer layer that protects eyes against dirt & germs). It can also be as a result of physical injury or trauma, such as being hit in the eye.

Glaucoma develops slowly and leads to blindness. But through regular eye tests and if found and treated early, blindness can be prevented.
