The 1st December 2020 marks World Aids Day.
The theme for this year is “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Resilience and Impact”.
As a SAMWUMED member you will be happy to know that the Scheme has a complete HIV Disease Management Programme that covers members and dependents for amongst others:
- Medicines to treat HIV (including those to prevent mother-to child transmission and infection after sexual assault or needle stick injury)
- Treatment to prevent opportunistic infections such as pneumonia and TB
- Regular monitoring of disease progression and response to treatment
- Regular monitoring tests to pick up possible side- effects of the treatment
- Ongoing patient support via a Nurse-Line
- Clinical guidelines and telephonic support for doctors
- Help in finding a registered counsellor for emotional support
Members and dependents who are exposed to HIV infection through sexual assault or needle-stick injury may ask the treating doctor to contact Aid for AIDS to authorise special antiretroviral medicine to help prevent possible HIV infection. The details are:
